BADEN-POWELL's book, Scouting for Boys, was originally published in six serialized parts from January to March 1908. He published these installments in book form in May 1908, following some reorganization and refinement. The book literally ignited the imagination of adolescent boys across the British Isles and began its world-conquering journey. It was translated into countless foreign languages, and boys in many countries eagerly took up the new program it set forth. The world brotherhood of Scouts gradually emerged.
Since 1908, Scouting for Boys, along with its various translations and adaptations, has appeared in millions of copies and has captured the youth of virtually the entire civilized world. The Scout movement, based on the book's teachings, achieved a scale of development that no other youth movement has ever come close to. Following the end of the Second World War, many of us felt that the simple truths of honesty, charity, helpfulness, and competence, which Baden-Powell expressed so compellingly in his book, needed to be presented to the world once again. This idea brought about the now-published world brotherhood edition of Scouting for Boys.
